General: VA Sec to Decide by Nov. 1 on Additions to Agent Orange Presumptive List

As reported August 3 by Tom Philpott for Stars and Stripes, VA Secretary Shulkin has announced he will decide “on or before” Nov. 1 whether to add to the Agent Orange presumptive list bladder cancer, hypothyroidism, and Parkinson-like symptoms without diagnosis of that particular disease. But hypertension (high blood pressure) and stroke also might be embraced, or ignored, as part of the current review.

News - : Senate Passes Bills to Address VA Budget Crisis, Claims Backlog

As reported August 2 by Hope Yen for The Washington Post, the Senate has approved two bills intended to address urgent problems at the VA, “clearing a $3.9 billion emergency spending package to fix a looming budget crisis and adopting new measures to pare down a rapidly growing backlog of veterans’ disability claims….”

These are well-respected, hardworking Americans who made great sacrifices to serve the country through the military. Unfortunately, many of these brave men and women spend their final days battling the illnesses triggered by years of exposure to asbestos, including mesothelioma.

General: June is PTSD Awareness Month

On June 2, VA launched the PTSD Treatment Decision Aid, a new online tool to help veterans compare treatment options for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. The interactive tool is intended to help educate patients about effective treatment options and encourages them to participate actively in decisions about their care.
